PROTECTION FROM IDENTITY THEFT
------------------------------------------

Your identity and personal information are extremely valuable commodities. As criminal gangs develop far more sophisticated means of working, technological advancements begin to play a vital role in their endeavour. Criminals can find out your personal details, use them in opening bank accounts, securing credit, loans, state benefits and in applying for passports and driving licenses in your name. If your identity is stolen you will find it extremely hard to get credit yourself which includes credit cards, loans and mortgages.

There are many ways in which thieves may attempt to steal your identity ranging from bogus "Spam" emails asking for personal information to "skimmer" devices attached to ATM machines, thieves may even attempt to intercept post containing cheque books or credit cards- some have been known to rummage through rubbish bins searching for disposed bank statements etc. various means of identity protection have been brought in over the last few year (Chip and Pin and secure websites) nevertheless, as one area of identity theft is combated the fraudsters seem to find another area free for the taking.

Our 'Protection from identity theft' module attempts to define identity theft as a crime and relates it directly to better-known crimes. Course attendees are shown various statistics from agencies that deal with detecting identity theft and case studies are discussed through the seminar. The main focus of this module is to address the issue in hand and develop attendee's consciousness to the growing problem by instructing them how to recognise and protect themselves from identity theft.
